ಹಳೇ ಕಾಲದ ಮನೆಗಳ ಸೂರು ತೊಲೆ, ಗಳು, ಹೆಂಚು ಗಳಿಂದ ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅಂಥಹ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಲೆ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮಲಗಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮಲಗಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾದಾಗಿ ಒಬ್ಬಾಕೆ ದೇವರ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಹೀಗೆ
"ತೊಲೆಯೇ ತೊಲೆಯೇ ನಾನೇ ಮರ, ನೀನೇ ಮನುಷ್ಯ, ಹಾವಿಗೆ ಹರನ ಆಣೆ, ಚೇಳಿಗೆ ಭೈರವನ ಆಣೆ, ಇರುವೆ ಎಂಭತ್ತುಕೋಟಿ ಜೀವರಾಶಿಗೂ ಬಿದ್ದ ಬಾಳಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಇತ್ತಿತ್ತ ಬಂದರೆ ತಾಯಿಮುದ್ರವ್ವೆಯ ಪಾದದಾಣೆ; ಹರಾ ಎಂತ ಬಲದ ಮಗ್ಗಲ ಹೂಡಿದೆ, ಹರಿ ಅಂತ ಎಡದ ಮಗ್ಗಲ ಹೂಡಿದೆ, ಚಿತ್ತಹೋಗಿ ಅಚ್ಚುತನನ್ನು ಕೂಡಿತು, ಮನಹೋಗಿ ಮಾಧವನನ್ನು ಕೂಡಿತು, ನಾನು ಹೋಗಿ ಕಾಶೀ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರನನ್ನು ಕೂಡಿದೆ. ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ನಂಜುಂಡೇಶ್ವರ, ತಾಯೆ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ, ಸಜ್ಜನಸಂಗ ಕೊಡು ದುರ್ಜನರ ದೂರತ್ತ ಇಡು ತಾಯೇ"

’ಮಾಡಿದ್ದುಣ್ಣೋ ಮಹಾರಾಯ’ ಕನ್ನದದ ಮೊದಲ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯೆಂದು ಎಲ್ಲೋ ಓದಿದ ನೆನಪು. ಅದನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಈಚೆಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು.

ಅದು ೧೯೧೫ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸುಮಾರು ನೂರುವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆಯೂ ಸರಳ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದಿದ್ದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆನಂದವಾಯಿತು. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಭಾಷೆ ಇರಬಹುದು ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ನನಗೆ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವೂ ಆಯಿತು. ಆನಂದಿಸುವಿರೆಂದು ನಂಬಿಕೆ ನನಗಿದೆ
